Harshit Rana cleans up India's tormentor-in-chief Travis Head to get his maiden Test wicket - WATCH

Harshit Rana cleans up India's tormentor-in-chief Travis Head to get his maiden Test wicket - WATCH

Delhi and Kolkata Knight Riders pacer Harshit Rana made his international debut for India in Perth in the first Test against Australia and was mighty impressive in his first spell with the ball. India were bowled out for 150 after choosing to bat first on a bowler-friendly wicket at the Optus.

Even if India wouldn't have gotten a Steve Smith or a Marnus Labuschagne out, the whole of 1.4 billion population back home was hoping and praying that Travis Head would get out cheaply. Head has given so much pain and trauma in the last 18 months or so to India and the Indian team that he was on the radar of the bowlers front and centre. Thankfully for India, the debutant Harshit Rana took care of the left-hander with a corker of delivery, hitting the top of the off stump.

Rana was on the money right from the first ball he bowled after being called up in the eighth over by skipper Jasprit Bumrah. Head hit a couple of good shots towards point after Harshit erred in line, even though the length was targeting his vulnerability against short-pitched deliveries. That whole over, Harshit peppered him with short deliveries.

At the start of his next over, Harshit had a couple of fielders on the boundary almost fooling Head into being prepared for short stuff. Harshit went a bit fuller on the off-stump line and got the ball to move away just a touch to shatter his stumps. India had their man. Even though Bumrah had taken three wickets before, this one gave a lot more satisfaction not just to the players but to the whole of the country.

Harshit was cock-a-hoop as he had his maiden international wicket in the form of dangerous Head, who was looking to take on the bowlers despite his team's precarious position. Mohammed Siraj followed it up with the wicket of Mitchell Marsh as Australia had lost half their side for just 38. India will hope to wrap up Australia below 100, to really seek some sort of advantage going into the second batting innings.

India were bowled out for 150 in their batting innings after Bumrah opted to bat first. Nitish Reddy on debut was the highest run-scorer for India scoring 41 off 58.

Target Stock Slumps To Lowest Point in Year on Weaker-Than-Expected Results

Target (TGT) shares tumbled 20% to their lowest point since November 2023 shortly after markets opened Wednesday following the release of the retailer's third-quarter earnings report, as it missed estimates for sales and profit.

The retailer reported $25.67 billion in revenue, up from $25.40 billion a year ago but below the $25.89 billion analysts expected, according to estimates compiled by Visible Alpha.

Target also reported $854 million in net income, or $1.85 per share, down from $971 million and $2.10 per share a year ago. Analysts had expected $1.05 billion and $2.28 per share.

Target Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Brian Cornell said the company saw a "volatile operating environment" in the quarter along with "some unique challenges and cost pressures that impacted our bottom-line performance."

The retailer also lowered its expected full-year EPS outlook to a range of $8.30 to $8.90, down from $9.00 to $9.70 last quarter. Its fourth-quarter EPS estimate of $1.85 to $2.45 is below the $2.66 consensus estimate.

Target shares, which had gained almost 10% on the year through Tuesday's close, were down 21% to $121.84 soon after markets opened. That erases Target's gains since the start of the year, putting them at their lowest point since last November, when shares rose nearly 18% the day Target reported third-quarter fiscal 2023 results.

Comparable Store Sales Decline 1.9%

Target, which has worked to regain market share after acknowledging earlier this year that higher prices had driven some customers away, saw comparable store sales decline by 1.9%. Thanks to a 10.8% increase in comparable digital sales, overall comparable sales rose 0.3%.

Last quarter, executives said

Last quarter, executives said they saw a consumer "willing and able to spend" as discretionary spending trends were improving in categories like apparel and beauty.

The company lowered prices on thousands of popular products over the summer, and recently announced a schedule of daily and weekly sales that will run through the holiday season, including a three-day "Early Black Friday" sale that took place earlier this month.

Rival Walmart (WMT) beat estimates in its earnings report Tuesday, and a week full of data from competitors like TJX Companies (TJX), BJ's Wholesale Club

(BJ), and others will also provide investors insight into the health and behaviors of the U.S. consumer ahead of the holiday shopping season.

Somaliland goes to the polls amid Ethiopia-Somalia port deal row

Somaliland goes to the polls amid Ethiopia-Somalia port deal row

Small Somaliland is positioned in the middle of a regional spat that some experts fear could escalate further.

Amid escalating regional tensions, voters in the self-declared state of Somaliland will vote on Wednesday in its fourth general election since its 1991 break from Somalia. While Somaliland now has its own government, parliament, currency, passports and other features of an independent country, however, its sovereignty remains unrecognised internationally as Somalia continues to view it as part of its territory.

In the capital city of Hargeisa, supporters of the ruling Kulmiye (Peace, Unity and Development) Party crowded the streets in green-and-yellow-coloured shirts, chanting victory songs, with women ululating as the campaigning ended last week.

Incumbent President Muse Bihi Abdi is seeking a renewed five-year mandate in the election, delayed by two years because of time and financial constraints, according to authorities. His main challenger is former parliament speaker and opposition candidate Abdirahman “Irro” Mohamed Abdullahi of the Somaliland National Party, also known as the Wadani party, which has promised more roles for women and young people in his governmtorial tensions with rebels in the disputed Las Anod, claimed by Puntland, another autonomous region that broke away from Somalia in 1998, have emerged as the key issues in the run-up to the election.

Crucially, the vote is also being shaped by the candidates’ international weight and what that could do for Somaliland, which is desperate to be recognised as a separate country.

President Abdi has touted his administration’s landmark “port-for-recognition” memorandum of understanding (MOU) for a deal with neighbouring Ethiopia, signed in January by him and Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The proposed deal would allow the larger, landlocked Ethiopia to use Somaliland’s Red Sea port of Berbera. In return, Ethiopia has said it will undertake an “in-depth assessment” of Somaliland’s quest for official recognition. In literal terms, Ethiopia has not specifically said it will recognise Somaliland. However, authorities in Hargeisa see eventual recognition as the outcThe historic maritime MOU has caused anger in Somalia, and relations between Ethiopia and Somalia have since virtually collapsed. In October, Ethiopian diplomat Ali Mohamed Adan was expelled from Somalia in what is just the latest in a long list of back-and-forth diplomatic spats.

Irro has capitalised on this fallout, blaming Abdi for being a divisive actor.

Egypt – Ethiopia’s longtime rival – and Turkey, a close ally of Somalia, have waded into the fray. Turkey has taken on the role of peacemaker by facilitating talks, while Egypt is backing Somalia by providing military The situation has got more tense with other actors getting involved,” Hargeisa-based political analyst Moustafa Ahmad told Al Jazeera. “I am not sure how the deal will go through. I’d say it is very unpredictable.” There is currently no set date for the deal to be made official.

The situation has got more tense with other actors getting involved,” Hargeisa-based political analyst Moustafa Ahmad told Al Jazeera. “I am not sure how the deal will go through. I’d say it is very unpredictable.” There is currently no set date for the deal to be made official.

The port deal: International recognition for Somaliland?

Ethiopia, Africa’s largest landlocked nation by population (more than 120 million) has relied exclusively on tiny neighbour Djibouti’s ports to access the Gulf of Aden for some time. After a three-decade-long war, Eritrea seceded from Ethiopia in 1993, causing the country to lose access to coastlines, something authorities there have always seen as hobbling its regional “big power” status.

Addis Ababa has since then sought more direct access to the important maritime routes around it, looking to diversify from Djibouti’s offerings. Last October, Prime Minister Abiy told parliament Ethiopia was surrounded by water but remained “thirsty”. Accessing the Red Sea and the Nile would secure the country’s future, he said.

Under the Somaliland deal, Ethiopia will take a 50-year lease of the Berbera Port, affording Addis Ababa 20km (12.5 miles) of the Red Sea coastline for commercial marine operations and a naval base. The port was redeveloped in 2018 by Dubai firm and port manager DP World, which holds a 51 percent stake in its operations. Hargeisa owns a 30 percent stake in the public-private partnership, while Addis Ababa has now acquired a 19 percent stake.

In addition, Hargeisa will also receive a stake in the state-owned Ethiopian Airlines, according to the January deal, although details about this part of the agreement are still scant.

Official recognition from Ethiopia could pave the way for global recognition, some analysts say, and lead other countries to trade with Somaliland or open embassies there.

ForHargeisa, the deal appears as good as done. “We are ready and just waiting for Ethiopia to sign the deal,” President Abdi told reporters on the campaign trail earlier this month. Authorities are trying to market the port as an alternative avenue to the Suez Canal where ships face attacks from Houthi rebels. Locally, it’ll be an economic “game changer” Abdi has said, and is set to unlock about $3.4bn in revenues.

A power change is unlikely to roll back local enthusiasm for the deal, analysts say, although the Wadani party has criticised Abdi for handling the deal with Ethiopia in a divisive manner. “From the Somaliland side, the deal is still on and will be on even if there’s a change of government and Wadani wins the elections,” Ahmad said.

When will that happen is another question entirely, though. Amid the regional fallout, Ethiopia has not yet put a date on when the lease will take effect or when it would officially recognise Somaliland – in what some say might be an attempt to slow down the process and not immediately escalate tensions.

What Is Physical Fitness?

What Is Physical Fitness?

Physical fitness refers to the ability of your body systems to work together efficiently to allow you to be healthy and perform activities of daily living. Being efficient means doing daily activities with the least effort possible. A fit person is able to perform schoolwork, meet home responsibilities, and still have enough energy to enjoy sport and other leisure activities. A fit person can respond effectively to normal life situations, such as raking leaves at home, stocking shelves at a part-time job, and marching in the band at school. A fit person can also respond to emergency situations - for example, by running to get help or aiding a friend in distress.

The Parts of Physical Fitness

Physical fitness is made up of 11 parts - 6 of them health related and 5 skill related. All of the parts are important to good performance in physical activity, including sports. But the 6 are referred to as contributing to health-related physical fitness because scientists in kinesiology have shown that they can reduce your risk of chronic disease and promote good health and wellness. These parts of fitness are body compositioncardiorespiratory enduranceflexibilitymuscular endurancepower, and strength. They also help you function effectively in daily activities.

As the name implies, skill-related physical fitness components help you perform well in sports and other activities that require motor skills. For example, speed helps you in sports such as track and field. These 5 parts of physical fitness are also linked to health but less so than the health-related components. For example, among older adults, balanceagility, and coordination are very important for preventing falls (a major health concern), and reaction time relates to risk for automobile accidents. Each part of physical fitness is described in more detail in the two following features: The Six Parts of Health-Related Fitness and The Five Parts of Skill-Related Fitness.

Health-Related Physical Fitness
Think about a runner. She can probably run a long distance without tiring; thus she has good fitness in at least one area of health-related physical fitness. But does she have good fitness in all six parts? Running is an excellent form of physical activity, but being a runner doesn't guarantee fitness in all parts of health-related physical fitness. Like the runner, you may be more fit in some parts of fitness than in others. The feature named The Six Parts of Health-Related Fitness describes each part and shows an example. As you read about each part, ask yourself how fit you think you are in that area.

Fit Fact

Power, formerly classified as a skill-related part of fitness, is now classified as a health-related part of fitness. A report by the independent Institute of Medicine provides evidence of the link between physical power and health. The report indicates that power is associated with wellness, higher quality of life, reduced risk of chronic disease and early death, and better bone health. Power, and activities that improve power, have also been found to be important for healthy bones in children and teens.

How do you think you rate in each of the six health-related parts of fitness? To be healthy, you should be fit for each of the six parts. Totally fit people are less likely to develop a hypokinetic condition - a health problem caused partly by lack of physical activity - such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, osteoporosis, colon cancer, or a high body fat level. You'll learn more about hypokinetic conditions in other chapters of this book. People who are physically fit also enjoy better wellness. They feel better, look better, and have more energy. You don't have to be a great athlete in order to enjoy good health and wellness and be physically fit. Regular physical activity can improve anyone's health-related physical fitness.

Skill-Related Physical Fitness
Just as the runner in our example may not achieve a high rating in all parts of health-related physical fitness, she also may not rate the same in all parts of skill-related physical fitness. Though most sports require several parts of skill-related fitness, different sports can require different parts. For example, a skater might have good agility but lack good reaction time. Some people have more natural ability in some areas than in others. No matter how you score on the skill-related parts of physical fitness, you can enjoy some type of physical activity.

Remember, too, that good health doesn't come from being good in skill-related physical fitness. It comes from doing activities designed to improve your health-related physical fitness, and it can be enjoyed both by great athletes and by people who consider themselves poor athletes.

As noted earlier, health-related fitness offers a double benefit. It not only helps you stay healthy but also helps you perform well in sport and other activities. For example, cardiorespiratory endurance helps you resist heart disease and helps you perform well in sports such as swimming and cross-country running. Similarly, strength helps you perform well in sports such as football and wrestling, muscular endurance is important in soccer and tennis, flexibility helps in sports such as gymnastics and diving, power helps in track activities such as the discus throw and the long jump, and having a healthy amount of body fat makes your body more efficient in many activities.

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR GYM: RESEARCH

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR GYM: RESEARCH

We likely all have fitness goals, whether you want to get stronger, push your accomplishments to the next level, or lose weight. Achieving those goals alone, however, can be an added challenge. Access to more equipment and amenities? Structured programs like personal training? Once you narrow down what you’re looking for, you can move on to the next step: making a list of your criteria.

WHAT ARE YOUR MUST-HAVES?

Now that you know what you want from a fitness center, write it down and refer back to it throughout your search. If you want the motivation of working out with other people, then perhaps you should prioritize finding a gym with group fitness classes. If you want to utilize a gym’s high-quality equipment, decide what type of equipment you are specifically looking for, whether it’s plenty of treadmills or rowing machines. Build your list of must-haves, and use it to narrow down all the possibilities in your area!

You should also think of what else you need from your future gym. Are they open during your preferred workout hours? Do they cater to your preferred sports or activities?

If you are working out immediately before or after other activities, then clean locker rooms and showers may be high on your list. If your concern is refueling, then you may want to prioritize fitness centers with amenities like a juice bar. Picture what you want and what you expect and make sure those items are noted on your list as well. Some items may be more negotiable than others, but that’s up to you!

FIND A MATCH

The Best Exercises for Seniors

 The Best Exercises for Seniors

Exercise is crucial for older adults, but it can be hard to know where to begin. If you haven’t worked out for a while, starting up again can be daunting. There’s also a good chance the exercises you were once accustomed to aren’t ideal for older adults.

Before you launch into an exercise regimen, it’s important to check with a physician to ensure you’re healthy enough for exercise, and to see which exercises are ideal for your current fitness level.

Here are seven exercises that are great for seniors:

1. Chair Yoga.

Chair yoga is a low-impact form of exercise that improves muscle strength, mobility, balance, and flexibility, all of which are crucial health aspects for seniors. Chair yoga provides less stress on muscles, joints, and bones than more conventional forms of yoga.

As an added bonus, chair yoga has been shown to improve mental health in older adults. Regular chair yoga participants have better quality sleep, lower instances of depression, and report a general sense of well-being.

Great chair yoga exercises for seniors include:

Overhead stretch

Seated cat stretch

Seated cow stretch

Seated mountain pose

Seated twist

2. Cycling

Cycling is an excellent form of exercise for seniors, offering a wide range of health benefits. It provides a low-impact cardiovascular workout that is easy on the joints, making it an ideal activity for older adults who may have arthritis or other joint issues.

Regular cycling helps to improve cardiovascular health, increase muscle strength, and enhance flexibility and balance, which can reduce the risk of falls. Cycling also can be adapted to suit individual fitness levels and health conditions. Additionally, cycling can improve mental health by reducing stress, anxiety, and depression, and can foster a sense of independence and well-being.

Some ways for seniors to benefit from cycling:

Start with short, flat rides

Increase duration and intensity over time

Use an electric bike

Join a social cycling group

For extra back support, use a stationary or recumbent bike

3. Pilates

7 Best Exercises for Seniors (and a Few to Avoid!)

Exercise and nutrition are essential parts of a healthy lifestyle throughout one’s life, and  as we age, our requirements are ever changing. A growing body of research illustrates how regular exercise is especially important for seniors, and how more seniors are opting for an active lifestyle instead of a sedentary one.

This article will show you the benefits of workouts for seniors, the seven best forms of exercise for older adults, and a few exercises that may be hazardous to seniors’ health.

The Health Benefits of Exercise in Older Adults

Our biology changes as we get older, causing seniors to have different reasons for staying in shape than younger generations. Though physical fitness provides benefits at any age, the health perks physically fit seniors enjoy are more notable. Physicians and researchers say seniors should remain as active as possible, without overexerting themselves. In older adults, exercise helps you live a longer, healthier, and more joyous life.

Some of the benefits of exercising later in life include:

More exercise means more independence for seniors

Seniors that exercise regularly are less likely to depend on others. According to Harvard Medical School, regular exercise promotes an older adult’s ability to walk, bathe, cook, eat, dress, and use the restroom. If self-reliance is a priority, exercise is one of the best ways to maintain independence for older adults.

Exercise improves balance for older adults

Falling down is a much bigger deal for older adults than younger ones. According to the National Council on Aging, one in four older Americans falls every year. Falls also are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries for people 65 and over. Though no two falls are alike, and preventing falls is very complex, regular exercise reduces the likelihood of falling by 23%.

Regular exercise means more energy

Though it seems counterintuitive, being inactive makes you tired and being active gives you more energy. Any amount of exercise promotes the release of endorphins, which counteract pain and give a sense of well-being. Endorphins also combat stress hormones, promote healthy sleep, and make you feel more lively and energetic overall.

Exercise helps prevent and counteract disease

Heart diseaseosteoporosisdepression, and diabetes are common diseases among older adults, and are often deadly. Fortunately, adopting a more active lifestyle can contribute to the prevention of these diseases, or reduce the unpleasant symptoms of these diseases if you already have them. If you are at risk for disease, exercise may be the key to warding off an unpleasant condition.

Regular exercise improves brain function

One of the most remarkable developments in health science is the revelation that the mind and the body are much more closely linked. A healthy body likely means a healthy mind, and seniors that exercise on a regular basis have improved cognitive health, according to research from NCBI. A study from the Alzheimer’s Research & Prevention Foundation also found that regular exercise can reduce your risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease or dementia by nearly 50%.

1. Chair Yoga

7 best exercises for seniors (and a few to avoid!)

  • Overhead stretch
  • Seated cat stretch
  • Seated cow stretch
  • Seated mountain pose
  • Seated twist

2. Cycling

senior cycling

  • Start with short, flat rides
  • Increase duration and intensity over time
  • Use an electric bike
  • Join a social cycling group
  • For extra back support, use a stationary or recumbent bike

3. Pilates

7 best exercises for seniors (and a few to avoid!)

Pilates is a popular low-impact form of exercise that was developed a century ago. In pilates exercises, breathing, alignment, concentration, and core strength are emphasized, and typically involves mats, pilates balls, and other inflated accessories to help build strength without the stress of higher-impact exercises. Pilates has been shown to improve balance, develop core strength, and increase flexibility in older adults.

Some great pilates exercises for older adults include:

  • Food slides
  • Leg circle
  • Mermaid movement
  • Side circles
  • Step ups

4. Strength Training

Strength training is highly beneficial for seniors, as it helps maintain muscle mass, improve bone density, and enhance overall physical functionality. As people age, they naturally lose muscle mass, which can lead to weakness and a higher risk of falls and fractures.

Strength training combats this by stimulating muscle growth and strengthening bones, reducing the risk of osteoporosis. Additionally, it improves joint health, flexibility, and balance, contributing to better mobility and independence.

Some good strength training equipment for seniors includes:

Ankle weights
Dumbbells
Exercise ball
Hand grips
Resistance bands
Wrist weights
5. Swimming and Water Aerobics

Workouts in the water are beneficial to seniors in a few ways. Swimming provides a full-body workout, improves cardiovascular health, and is easy on the joints. The warm water of a pool can soothe muscles and joints.

Water aerobics is also an extremely popular exercise for seniors. Additionally, water brings natural resistance, which eliminates the need for weights in strength training. Water aerobics exercises improve your strength, flexibility, and balance with minimal stress on your body.

Great water aerobics exercises for seniors include:

  • Aqua jogging
  • Arm curls
  • Flutter kicking
  • Leg lifts
  • Standing water push-ups

Best Exercises for Weight Loss

Exercise? Me?

Losing weight happens by not only changing your eating habits, but also stepping up your exercise routine. Regular exercise will go a long way in achieving your goals. To lose weight, you should aim to get at least 300 minutes of moderately intense activity each week. Here are some exercises that can help you on that journey. Just remember to first talk with your doctor about which ones might be best for you.

Walking

If you were to add half an hour of brisk walking to your daily routine, you could burn about 150 more calories than you usually do each day. The faster and longer you walk, the more calories you burn. Walking is a great option if you’re new to regular exercise. Start with shorter journeys and build up to longer, more intense ones.

Jumping Rope

If you’re looking for a cheap piece of workout equipment you’ll be able to take on trips, a jump-rope just might be for you. Jumping rope is a fantastic way to burn calories fast. In fact, you’ll burn more of them by jumping rope than walking on a treadmill for the same amount of time. You'll also work multiple muscle groups, from your core to your upper and lower body. Jumping rope can also improve your coordination.

High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

High-intensity interval training (also called HIIT) is a type of workout that switches back and forth from intense physical activity to less-intense exercise. You shouldn't do it every day, but it's very effective for weight loss. You’ll burn more calories with HIIT than with steady cardio. The intense exercise keeps your body working and in fat-burning mode for up to 24 hours after your workout ends.

Cycling
Cycling is another great way to lose weight, and it’s a low-impact, adaptable exercise. You can burn about 400-750 calories an hour riding a bike, depending on your weight, how fast you’re going, and what type of cycling you’re doing.

Swimming
It can be hard to be motivated to work out if your knees are achy or your back hurts. If you're in that boat, swimming is an ideal exercise. It's easy on your joints, you’ll use both your upper and lower body, and you'll get a good cardio workout. You’ll reap the benefits from the resistance of the water, too. If you swim for a half-hour a few times a week, you’ll lower your risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers. It'll also bring down your bad cholesterol and blood pressure.

Fitness Industry Trends in 2024

 1. Fitness Wearables

Fitness wearables is a general term for a group of devices that are designed to be worn throughout the day. Fitness wearables are also known as fitness trackers and include smartwatches.

Fitness wearables have evolved quite dramatically since the introduction of the Fitbit in 2009. With people now being more and more concerned with the inner workings of their bodies, wearables are progressing beyond tracking your training performance.

Devices such as the Oura Ring and the Apple Watch allow you to monitor your blood oxygen levels, stress hormone response, and detailed sleep parameters. New devices go beyond proving raw data by translating it into practical takeaways. For example, the Oura Ring analyzes a raft of sleeping data points to answer the question “How did I sleep last night’ and then provides suggestions for improvement.

According to Fortune Business Insights, the fitness tracker market size has been increasing every year and is expected to reach $114.36 billion by 2028. In 2024, the ACSM declared it the #1 fitness trend of the year.

2. Online Workouts & Hybrid Memberships

Many gym members got a taste for online fitness training during the lockdowns. The convenience and ease of fitting these new workouts into their schedule were, naturally, appealing. While the trend for online fitness is set to continue, for many people able to return to the gym, there’s an increasing demand for the option to mix online and in-person gym sessions.

Gyms that offer hybrid memberships at a discounted rate will be able to get themselves to the front of the line to meet the demand for this type of training flexibility. Some gyms are promoting two personal visits and unlimited online small group sessions for about half of what a regular membership costs.

3. Biohacking

Biohacking describes do-it-yourself biology. It involves people making incremental changes to their bodies through diet, exercise, lifestyle, and supplementation to improve their health, well-being, and cognitive performance.

Biohacking is about eating better, sleeping, hydration, and supplementation primarily. But advancements have made it about augmentation with technology also.

Examples of biohacking technology include continuous blood glucose monitors, fitness wearables, and implanted sensors.

Biohacking technology includes nootropics as well. Nootropics are supplements that improve your cognitive function, such as caffeine, nicotine, and over-the-counter nootropic pills.

In 2023, biohacking exploded into the mainstream. Now regular people are concerned with optimizing both cognitive and physical performance through exercise, nutrition, supplementation, and recovery habits. In 2024, biohacking is supported by the skyrocketing popularity of fitness wearables.

4. Low Impact Workouts

The pandemic environment has inspired more and more people who were previously living a sedentary lifestyle to consider exercise to improve their overall well-being. Many of these people are intimidated by the high intensity, high impact workouts that often take place on the gym floor. Catering to them with low impact, non-threatening workout options will become increasingly important this year.

Gyms that offer low impact, low threat beginner group classes using such equipment as recumbent cycles, rowing machines, and steppers will be better equipped to cater to this demand.

5. Outdoor Fitness

After being forced to spend so much time indoors during the Covid lockdowns, there is a yearning among many to spend as much time outdoors as possible. For a lot of people, the prospect of working out inside the four walls of a concrete building holds very little appeal. As a result, exercising outdoors has become an increasingly popular option.

Among the most popular forms of outdoor exercise are hiking, cycling, jogging, and Bootcamp style group fitness classes. In addition to offering morning, midday, and evening Bootcamp classes, gyms should consider adding an outdoor extension where gym members can train under the sun. Setting up a free-weight circuit with rebounders and cycles provides a compact area that can handle a heavy traffic flow and that is easy to bring back in at night time.

6. Mini Workouts

Rather than dedicating an hour to their workout, many people are preferring to chunk it up into smaller, more frequent sessions. That might consist of three 15 minute sessions spread throughout the day or quick bursts of 5-10 minutes.

While a lot of people find these shorter workouts easier to fit into their daily schedule, others prefer to focus on a body part exclusively and then get a few hours recovery before hitting another body part, rather than doing them together and being fatigued on the second muscle group.

As a fitness professional, you can cater to this workout trend by providing a range of mini workouts for your clients to do at home with little or no equipment. Include them in your email newsletters and on social media.

7. HIIT Workouts

High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) has been around for a couple of decades. As more and more people have become educated about the benefits of this type of training, it has grown in popularity. As a result, HIIT has been on trending lists like this one for the past several years.

This year, traditional HIIT based cardio will continue to rise in popularity. At the same time, more and more people will move their HIIT workouts onto the gym floor as they combine strength training into the HIIT model. This workout trend will involve performing short bursts of such exercises as squats, kettlebell swings, or renegade rows for 20-30 seconds, followed by even shorter rest periods and repeated for multiple rounds.

Gyms that incorporate these types of classes and promote them as individual training options will be at the advantage this year.

8. Mindfulness

The compounding stress, anxiety, and general uneasiness of the world situation – a pandemic leading into a terrible war in Eastern Europe that threatens to envelop the entire world – has prompted an increased focus on mental health.

Mindfulness trended several years ago and has never gone away. This year, however, an ever-increasing number of people will turn to mindful meditation to cope with the unprecedented times. This will flow over to more people taking up meditative exercises such as yoga and pilates.

Fitness professionals who offer information and guidance in mindfulness will be ahead of the curve on this trend.

9. Small-Group Personal Training

Small group personal training, where groups of between four and ten people work with a personal instructor, is becoming more and more popular. With gas prices going through the roof, the cost effectiveness of these group classes is a big plus. So is the camaraderie and the group motivation effect.

10. Gamification

The integration of gaming and fitness has taken some time to evolve. We are now seeing some industry leaders offering cardio training gear that takes the interactive gaming experience to the next level.

One of the best examples of this gamification of exercise is the Aviron rowing machine, which allows you to play a dozen different interactive games while you’re working out, including ‘Zombie Apocalypse’ and ‘Disaster Down Under’. There’s also a ‘Joes vs Pros’ option where you can compete against world champions.

Companies like Aviron are forcing competitors to step up their game.

11. Innovative Group Classes

Group classes will remain popular this year but clients will be wanting variety beyond the standard far. As a result of the viral popularity of such videos as weighted hula hoops and reverse running on platforms like TikTok. As a result, we are likely to see a trend toward more fun group classes such as trapeze, trampolining and rollerblading

12. Exercise as Medicine

Spurred on by the pandemic, many people are more focused on the inner health of their body than its outward appearance. Fitness professionals who adjust to this shift in mindset by placing more emphasis on a strong immune system than a bulging bicep muscle will benefit from this trend.

The reality is that the actual workouts that people do to achieve inner health are essentially the same as they do to improve the look of their bodies. The difference is in perception. By catering to this increased desire to be healthier on the inside, you will be at an advantage.

13. Fitness Recovery

Over the past few years, there has been an increasing level of research into the benefits of fitness recovery. This has spurred increasing public interest in doing more than simply resting between workouts. Active recovery tools such as foam rollers and massage guns have become very popular over the last year and will only become more so this year.

Fitness professionals should consider providing recovery tools for their clients in a dedicated recovery zone. That could mean having massage guns and foam rollers available in the warm-up/warm-down area. You should also provide guidance and information about the benefits of active recovery and how to go about it.

14. Super Star Trainers

One outgrowth of the virtual training phenomena of the last couple of years has been the emergence of the rock star trainer. Trainers with both the moves and the personality have been able to establish themselves as fitness gurus with viral videos and hundreds of thousands of Instagram followers.

Online fitness training will be as big as ever in 2023. Gyms will take advantage of the superstar trainer trend by promoting their fitness classes around the trainer rather than the benefits of the particular class. We are also likely to see a raft of merchandise, including T-shirts, calendars, and mugs featuring these celeb trainers.

15. Functional Fitness

Functional Fitness involves performing movements that simulate things that you might do outside the gym such as flipping a tire or pulling a rope. It offers more variety and challenge than the conventional sets and reps style of working out on the gym floor.

Spurred on by viral videos on YouTube and TikTok, there is an increasing interest in physical performance as opposed to simply getting big muscles. Rightly or wrongly, functional fitness training is seen as the way to develop that ability.

A typical functional fitness workout might involve pushing a weight sled, using battle ropes, doing burpees, and doing plyometrics. Gyms that provide a dedicated functional fitness area will benefit from the functional fitness trend.

In 2024, more and more people will set up functional fitness areas as part of their home gyms with the inclusion of tires, sledge hammers and battle ropes into their equipment range.

16. Golf

After a couple of years of being confined to our homes, the thought of wandering around the greens swinging a golf club seems pretty inviting, So, it shouldn’t surprise that more and more people are taking up the game as a means of getting fit. The demographic of those new golfers is also younger than it’s ever been, with more of them being in the 24-34 age group than any other.

As a fitness professional, you might not be able to actually provide a full golfing experience for your members. But you can structure and promote workouts to improve golf fitness. You might even find the space to put in a mini driving range.

17. Wellness Coaching

There has been a huge growth in the hiring of wellness coaches over the last few months and this trend is set to continue through 2024. Some United States Insurance companies are already paying for wellness coaching to reduce the number of claims.

Wellness coaches work with clients to develop a personal wellness blueprint and then guide them to its implementation. Coaches typically meet with their clients once or twice a week for 30-40 minutes each session.

18. Reverse Running

Believe it or not, reverse running is one of the most searched fitness topics of the moment. It comes on the back of research showing that running backward can assist with injury recovery, places greater emphasis on the hamstrings, and is less impacting on the joints.

When you balance out forward running with reverse running, you can give equal emphasis to both the posterior and anterior kinetic chains. It will also help with your posture. When it comes to cardiovascular benefits, some experts have claimed that running backward provides up to 8 times the benefit of forward running

. Reverse Running is set to explode this year. Fitness professionals who get ready by educating their clients as to its benefits and incorporating it into their programming will reap the benefits.

19. Hygiene Awareness

People coming back to the gym post-lockdown will have a heightened awareness of hygiene. That means that gyms and other fitness providers need to be more vigilant than ever about keeping their facilities spotless.

In addition to having spray bottle and paper towels stations liberally spread around the gym, I recommend posting a whiteboard in the shower and locker rooms where the cleaners fill in what time the last clean was completed. Each area should be cleaned at least twice per day.

20. Home Gyms

As a result of the pandemic, many were forced to workout from home, which drove them to start their own gyms. Many found that they preferred home gyms to the busy, sometimes inconvenient traditional box gym. As a result, more people than ever are buying home workout equipment, including traditional barbells, benches, and squat racks.

Home gyms were popular in 2023, but they continue to grow in popularity in 2024.

21. The Rowing Machine

During the lockdown, the rowing machine really came into its own. As people began researching the next home fitness cardio machines for total body fitness, they increasingly became aware of just how much better the rowing machine is than the other options. Rowing activates the muscles of your lower and upper body, while also burning a ton of calories.

The advancement of interactive rowing machine technology, led by companies like Aviron and Hydrow has been another factor that has led to the rise of the rowing machine. Rowing machine sales will continue to soar and gym members will expect to have a good range of rowing machines on offer.

Rowing machine fitness classes are another consideration for fitness professionals.

22. Gym Will Become More Social

With increasing numbers of people working from home, the daily visit to the gym will become the only social outing that many people have. It will become the place for former workmates to meet up, sweat together, and then spend a few minutes catching up.

Gyms that provide relaxation areas where members can spend time together after their training session will benefit from that trend. If they’ve got a snack and smoothie bar, all the better.

Another consequence of more people working from home is that gyms will see an easing of the traditional high traffic times before and after traditional working hours.

23. Resurgence of Free Weight Strength Training

More and more people are becoming educated about the benefits of strength training, according to a study from Current Sports Medicine Reports by Wayne L. Westcott. Strength training will benefit every single biomarker of aging, improve bone strength, increase metabolism and help you to have a stronger immune system.

As a result of this growing awareness, gyms will see more people wanting to take up strength training with free weights but having no desire to look – or train – like a bodybuilder or powerlifting. Gyms that provide newbie friendly free weight training areas that are non-threatening will be at an advantage.

24. Rucking

The wearables and biohacking trends got people outside. As part of that, more people started rucking.

Inspired in part by military marching, rucking is walking or hiking supercharged by a weighted backpack, or “rucksack”–hence the name.

Start light, but you can up your weight and distance progressively. Rucking is popular because it combines the ease and pleasance of walking with functional resistance training. As a result, you can burn almost as many calories as if you had gone for a run!
